In this series of pieces I am more concerned with each individual as a soloist in their own right. In the symphonies my concern was in using the orchestra as a medium to express ideas or tell stories. In these pieces I want to give everyone to be a real soloist in their own right, as do Bartok and Lutoslawski in their concerti for Orchestra and to some extent Bach in the Brandenburg concerti.

This does not mean that the pieces are without form but rather that the interplay between soloists defines the form rather than using the existing pattern of a symphony within which which to promote a musical argument.

Consequently there are some seriously difficult passages these works. This may well hinder their becoming mainstream repertoire for recorder orchestras. I understand that well enough but would like to take the opportunity to let people see where I am going by presenting them here.
